In 2019, a study of more than 19,000 people found that spending just two hours a week in nature was associated with better health and greater happiness.* It doesn’t even have to be in one go. You can break it into smaller chunks and the benefits remain. And the best part? It’s easy and enjoyable! Here are some ideas…
Get outside in the early light
Have your coffee outside, walk the dog or simply walk barefoot in the yard. Morning light is a natural source of vitamin D, while also signalling your circadian clock to support alertness during the day and sleep at night.
Watch the sun go down
Spend 10 to 20 minutes outside around dusk and listen for animals settling in for the night. Experiencing the light change from bright to dark also supports our circadian rhythm, which can help with sleep.
Birdwatch
There’s something mesmerising about watching birds. Spend some time sitting quietly outside and notice how many different birds you can see and hear. TIME reports that seeing and hearing birds is associated with improved mental health.
Get into natural water
Swim at Currimundi Lake or in the ocean, or simply wade along the shoreline. The sound and sight of moving water can reduce stress levels and improve mood.
Use your senses
Deliberately notice five things you can see, four you can hear, three you can feel, two you can smell and one you can taste.
Go outside after dark
Look at the stars, notice the constellations and listen for nocturnal animals such as frogs, bats and birds.
Grow something
Create an ongoing relationship with the weather, seasons, insects, soil and plants. Even better if it’s something you can eat!
Go outside in imperfect weather
There’s something thrilling about being outside in light rain, foggy weather or the cold of a wintry day. Make nature part of everyday life, rather than enjoying it only when it’s sunny and warm.
Have phone-free time
Leave your phone behind whenever you’re reconnecting with the natural environment. You’re much more likely to notice sounds, animals, plants, the temperature and other details when you’re not distracted or switching your attention.
Make a day of it
Every so often, plan a bigger trip to
one of our region’s natural attractions, such as the Glass House Mountains, Wild Horse Mountain, Ewen Maddock Dam, Currimundi Lake, Obi Obi Lookout, Buderim Falls or one of the beautiful beaches across Caloundra and beyond.
