Welcome Sunshine Coast, to my first Salty Sessions!
I’m Angie and I have officially been handed the surf column baton. It’s an honour to follow in John’s footsteps sharing stories from our incredible local surf community.
I thought I’d start by introducing myself.
Growing up between Eumundi and Redcliffe, most weekends were spent at Noosa. My dad and brother would surf the green waves while I happily threw myself into the white wash on whatever board I could find, cheering myself on and loving every second of it. That’s how my dad gave me the nickname Queen of the White Wash.
The funny thing is, back then, I didn’t even know there were different surfing levels. I was simply a girl who loved being in the ocean.
At 33, I found my way back to surfing and booked myself a lesson. Like many beginners, I thought riding a green wave made me an intermediate. I soon realised surfing is about so much more than catching waves.
It’s about learning to read the ocean, understanding surf etiquette, choosing the right equipment, and embracing that there is always more to learn.
Today, I’ve gone from the Queen of the White Wash to helping more than 1,000 women discover the joy of surfing — a passion that has taken me around the world chasing waves.
Next edition, I’ll share the five biggest lessons that helped me break through the beginner barrier.
See you in the lineup.
SALTY SESSIONS TIP
Every hour spent in the ocean is another hour learnt. Just like learning to drive, confidence and skills come from time in the water.
