Two local innovators are making recycling easier—and a lot more appealing—across Caloundra. Through a practical collaboration between Moffs Made Doosh Bags and the Strong Street recycling facility in Baringa, locals are discovering a smarter way to collect and return their cans and bottles.
Created by Caloundra local Michael Flocke (AKA Frog), Moffs Made Doosh Bags are purpose-built recycling bags made from upcycled Australian shade-sail fabric. The material itself has an impressive story. The heavy-duty cloth begins as UV-stabilised thread produced in Sydney, then woven into industrial shade fabric in Brisbane. Any leftover short threads are cleverly woven into a second line of colourful, one-off fabric, giving the material a second life rather than sending it to landfill.
Michael purchases these unique 100-metre rolls and transforms them into durable drawstring bags designed specifically for collecting containers. After teaching himself to sew on an industrial machine and five years refining his designs, he has created a product that is both practical and long-lasting. Because the fabric is designed for outdoor shade structures, the bags are incredibly tough and UV-stable, meaning they will last for decades.
The bags are designed to make recycling easier at home, but the experience doesn’t stop there. Michael encourages customers to take their filled bags to the purpose-built Strong Street recycling facility in Baringa, which he says has changed the game for container returns.
Unlike traditional depots, the family-owned site allows visitors to simply reverse up to the machine, unload their cans and bottles, and be on their way within minutes. A new high-speed automatic counting system makes the process even faster, particularly for larger loads. Combined with friendly staff and an easy, semi-outdoor setup, the experience has turned recycling from a chore into something locals actually enjoy.
Together, Moffs Made Doosh Bags and the Strong Street Recyclers are proving that thoughtful design, local collaboration and a bit of creativity can make sustainability simple and rewarding.
