Women, too, are discovering the benefits of a comfortable space to connect and socialise. Meet Evelyn McCorkell, a Caloundra local who founded the not-for-profit community support and social group, the Caloundra Women’s Shed.
Evelyn’s Start-Up Tips
1. Network and Share Your Ideas
“I went to the opening of the Coolum Women’s Shed in 2019, and it planted the seed,” Evelyn recalls. “In February 2023, I posted on Facebook: ‘I’d like to start a Women’s Shed for Caloundra. Who’s interested?’ Soon after, I met with six friends I played cards with and pitched the idea. They loved it! The next week, we each brought a friend, and our group grew to twelve. I created the ‘Caloundra Women’s Shed’ Facebook page, and things escalated from there.”
2. Assemble Your Team
“In the beginning, we were fortunate to find a few key people. I took on the role of president, and we recruited a secretary to manage membership and governance, as well as a treasurer for finances. With those roles filled, we formed our board. When we held our first Annual General Meeting, MP Jason Hunt graciously hosted the event, a gesture he repeated this year.”
3. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask
“Facebook has been a valuable tool. When we’ve needed resources or volunteers, we’ve posted on there and received great responses. For instance, we secured our first meeting space at Blackbird House, Women’s Therapy Centre in Caloundra. In 2024, we’ve expanded to use Bells on Main on Bulcock Street for meetings and workshops.”
4. Know Your ‘Why’
“There are many lonely women—some who have lost their partners, others who’ve moved to the coast to care for parents or grandchildren and don’t get out much. We’re here to provide care and support for women of all ages and walks of life, offering a space where they feel safe, valued, and understood. Our focus is on creating a relaxed, welcoming environment that promotes well-being and belonging. It’s low-key, low-cost, and community-centred.”
5. Create Opportunities for Connection
“Our activities are designed to foster community and fun. Regular events include Chit Chat Tuesday, Wednesday Night Trivia, Pizza in the Park, craft workshops, and outings to enjoy live music at local venues. Recently, we’ve expanded to include new crafts, casual card games, and group walks.”
6. Be Open and Inclusive
“Our core values are inclusion, connection, friendship, warmth, nurturing, and respect. Happy Valley is one of our favourite spots, so if you see a group of women gathered at one of the tables, come say hi! We’re always welcoming new members.”
7. Keep Moving Forward
“Our main goal for 2025 is to secure land in Caloundra and apply for a grant to build our own shed. It’s an exciting prospect, and we’re eager to take the next step!”
