Hi crew!
New boards are not cheap, so many surfers opt to buy a second-hand board. It’s not unusual for used boards to have some scars and dings. As long as old injuries have been properly repaired, these only affect the look of the board, not its performance.
But it’s “buyer beware”, so closely examine all old dings and ask the seller to explain any bad dings and how they were repaired. The most important thing is that any repair has been watertight. If the area around a ding is brown, discoloured, spongy or soft, water has got in — bad news for any board! It would need to be very cheap, otherwise keep looking.
When you’re happy with the shape and quality of a board, don’t forget to barter about the price. It’s expected! Offer to pay with cash, which is always more tempting for a seller. And remember, it’s worth taking your time — the right board will find you.
So good luck in your mission! And if you want to get into surfing, my best advice is to have a lesson with an experienced surf coach. Talk to Russell at North Caloundra Surf School –0411 221 730, or John at Caloundra Surf School – 0413 381 010.
