Scone Time in Caloundra

There’s a frisson of anticipation among those waiting patiently in the queue. In the CWA hall itself, a hubbub of happy chatter, helpers busy with trays loaded with delicious scones, and the genteel rattle of vintage teacups herald another monthly Sconetime in Caloundra.

Sunshine Coast foodie extraordinaire Martin Duncan has created a community ripple of connection and company with his runaway success story, Sconetime. From a small idea, a mighty monthly event has swelled across the Sunshine Coast and beyond.

Globally, there is increasing social disconnection to a point that experts are calling it an epidemic. In 2023, an Australian study indicated that around 33% of people feel socially isolated, and that one in six people feels extremely lonely [ABC News, August 2023].

It is often the most vulnerable, such as seniors and disabled citizens, who are most affected. Sconetime has become a valued and much-loved event for many, particularly the senior members of our community.

For many, this monthly date is highlighted as their most anticipated outing, and whether regular attendees or newbies to the event, the general exuberance—led by effervescent MC Martin and supported by volunteers and sponsors—is infectious.

Martin’s amazing ability as a vibrant social connector has been recognised in his nomination for the SCC Citizen of the Year Award.

First-time Sconetimers Helen Abbott and Michael Walton of Little Mountain certainly enjoyed their experience: the lively conversations, hearing useful information, meeting new people, and all accompanied by Martin’s delicious scones—over 300 in just one morning!

After November, Sconetime will break until February. Make room on your calendar for the next SconeTime, and treat yourself to some mouth-watering morning tea and simple social fun.
