Caloundra’s History of Friendly Competition

Caloundra has always had a playful, competitive spirit. Long before instant entertainment, locals created quirky, homegrown contests that brought the community together through simple fun.

From sandcastle competitions in the 1940s to Tiny Tots and Surf Girl contests in the 1950s, the town embraced spectacle. The 1960s delivered crab races along Bulcock Street and powerboat marathons to Golden Beach, while the 1970s saw bathtub derbies, bed races and festive street parades.

Together, these events reveal a town rich in creativity and friendly rivalry.
