Brisbane teachers Grace Herdman and Matt Millward have swapped the classroom for the open road after winning BIG4’s year-long The BIG Aussie Review. Thy recently rolled into BIG4 Caloundra Waterfront, where they stopped to explore our patch. They share their experience with The Chronicle.
How are you enjoying your new home on the road?
The set-up has been life-changing. The Ranger drives like a dream and has all the bells and whistles, allowing us to travel safely and comfortably. Our Crusader Musketeer Grand Treville is luxury on wheels. Its clever use of space makes it feel spacious and homely.
What was the highlight of your Caloundra stay?
Our trip to Mount Tinbeerwah, where BIG4 Caloundra Waterfront legend Angus Booker took us abseiling. We expected a small rock where we could learn the basics, but we were faced with a 50-metre cliff! It was intense and something we probably would never have experienced otherwise.
What would you say to locals who take their backyard for granted?
Get out and enjoy the slice of paradise you live in. The waterfront from Kings Beach, along the Pumicestone Passage to Golden Beach, was an amazing place to run and walk each day. Caloundra’s beaches and waterways are such a treat, especially when you can cool off whenever you like.
Which destination has made the strongest impression so far?
BIG4 Mackay Blacks Beach, because of the amazing community within the park. The caravanners were kind, friendly and generous. They made us crumpets, took us fishing and helped us sort out a jockey wheel problem as we were leaving. That community feeling made the stay very special.
What lessons will you take back to the classroom?
People, people, people. It is always the people who make a place special. Be open to meeting new people, trying new things and experiencing each destination with local knowledge in mind. Locals often lead you towards the experiences you might otherwise miss.
