The Sunshine Coast’s vibrant arts community once again takes centre stage with the much-anticipated Local Contemporary Art Prize 2026, now in its twelfth year. Presented by Caloundra Regional Gallery in partnership with Sunshine Coast Council and the Friends of the Gallery, Caloundra, this enduring exhibition continues to celebrate and elevate the extraordinary creative talent that shapes our region.
Formerly known as the Local Artist – Local Content Art Prize, the reimagined Local Contemporary Art Prize builds on the foundation laid by the Friends Regional Gallery Caloundra Inc. in 2014. Over more than a decade, the Prize has championed the depth, diversity and evolution of visual arts practice across the Sunshine Coast—illuminating the stories, landscapes and lived experiences that define our sense of place.
This year’s exhibition brings together a dynamic collection of two- and three-dimensional works, offering a rich spectrum of artistic approaches. From realism and impressionism to abstraction and experimental forms, the 2026 finalists explore distinctive environments, personal narratives and contemporary concerns with creativity and insight. With more than 215 entries received, the selection of just 40 finalists presented an inspiring challenge, revealing the many ways artists observe and interpret the world around them.
A highlight of the Prize is the announcement that the 2026 Best in Show—sponsored by Sunshine Coast Council and the Friends of the Gallery—will be acquired into the Sunshine Coast Art Collection. This ongoing commitment ensures the region’s artistic legacy continues to grow. The Friends also support the 2D and 3D Excellence Awards, and, alongside Community Bank, Bendigo Bank, they sponsor the ever-popular People’s Choice Award.
This year’s judge, Kerryanne Farrer, brings more than three decades of experience in visual arts leadership, community engagement and cultural development. Currently Galleries Manager at Redland Art Gallery, her insight and expertise guide the 2026 judging process with distinction.
Running alongside the main exhibition, the Local Student Art Prize 2026 once again shines a spotlight on emerging young artists. Initiated by former Gallery Patron Marie Pigott and supported by the Friends, this uplifting showcase invites visitors to celebrate the next generation of creative talent.
