With Shano ‘Fixo’ Fixter
As the captain of the Pumicestone Passage Pirates, I’ve seen firsthand the power of the passage not just as a fishing spot, but as a place of community, healing, and adventure. Our group, founded on the principles of inclusivity, conservation, and camaraderie, has grown to over 13,000 members who share a deep respect for the waters and each other.
Each month, we’ll be sharing tales from the passage—highlighting the beauty of fishing, crabbing, and prawning, while ensuring we’re conserving the ecosystem. For us, fishing is more than a hobby; it’s a way to connect with nature and each other, and it carries immense health benefits.
Take for example the story of one of our young members, Hunter. Coming from a tough background, he initially found it difficult to integrate with the group. But after a few mornings on the water, casting his line, and learning from experienced fishers, he’s gained confidence, purpose, and pride in his contributions. This is what the Pirates are all about: fostering connection and promoting well-being through the love of fishing.
In the months to come, we’ll delve into tips and tricks for fishing the passage, profiles of our amazing members, and our mission to protect this vital waterway for future generations. So grab your rods, your bait, and your adventurous spirit—there’s so much more to explore with the Pumicestone Passage Pirates.
