Have you ever considered volunteering?
I’ve taken on many volunteer roles over the years, and each one has contributed to my life in wonderful ways.
Seed collecting gave me new skills and a growing knowledge of plants. Those skills eventually led me to K’gari (Fraser Island), following a chance meeting with the late John Sinclair of FIDO, and ultimately to my current paid role as Nursery Manager and coordinator of volunteers at MRL.
I like to say we grow plants and people here at MRL. We rely on our wonderful volunteers to assist with our day-to-day operations, but they often tell me they receive so much more in return.
Here are some reflections from our volunteers on why they love what they do:
“Education, learning new skills, making friends — hanging out with your tribe. Companionship and shared ideals.”
“A great way to get away from those anti-social devices.”
“It’s my happy place. I love the sense of community and meeting people of all ages and abilities.”
So, check out your local community group or visit https://govolunteer.com.au/ for opportunities. You never know where it might lead or who you might meet and you’ll certainly have fun along the way.
National Volunteer Week 2026 will be held from 18–24 May, celebrating the theme Your Year to Volunteer.
